Chrismont Elementary welcomes new students and strongly encourages our Primary students to continue their education in our innovative Montessori Elementary Program. Classroom teaching includes faculty and associate teachers, parents, and special guests. Our classroom represents a real life scenario in which all age groups are working together under the same roof. When your child expresses interest in a topic, the instructor presents an exercise to introduce the topic and then monitors his or her progress. With gentle guidance from the instructors, students work at their own pace until they have completed the exercise; or in many instances, have mastered the topic. It is fairly common and very rewarding to see our 8-9 year old students helping our 6-7 year old students with their work. Hands-on, self-correcting learning tools are available and students are encouraged to drill as deep as they want with their respective interests. When your child is given the opportunity to learn in this manner, you'll be amazed at how far they progress in a short amount of time.
Although the students dictate where their interests are, our Elementary curriculum includes the opportunity to master the following concepts:
Language:
Spelling: including rules, prefixes, suffixes, homonyms, compound words.
Rules for grammar and syntax: introduction to word function and all parts of speech including predicates, subjects, prepositions, conjunctions, direct and indirect objects.
Introduction to sentence types: emphasis on simple and compound sentences.
Reading comprehension: use of self-correcting material to check understanding of stories, exposure to various types of literature.
Writing and Composition: writing and illustration of stories, poems, and self-initiated research projects; cursive writing and ways to format projects.
Use of dictionary and atlas.
Mathematics:
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of all numbers.
Negative numbers, and decimal system to the millions.
Introduction to fractions, multiples, factors, divisibility.
Squaring and cubing.
Time, money, and measurement.
Geometry.
Social Studies:
History of oral and written communication, the alphabet, and the English language.
History of civilization: time line of the universe, earth, life, and human beings; fundamental needs of humankind before and during our era.
Native Americans, American history, U.S. government, and famous people.
Geology: formation of the solar system and the Earth's crust; rotation and revolution of the Earth, the effects on night, day, and seasons.
Geography: study of physical, political, and economic geography.
Science:
Study of rocks and minerals.
Properties and characteristics of three states of matter; effects of heating and cooling.
Differences between mixtures and compounds.
Differences between living and nonliving.
Land forms and animal kingdoms: functions of major land forms and needs of respective animal life.
Introduction to the parts of the body, systems of the body, skeletal and muscular structure.
French:
Continuation of French language instruction.
Grades 1-3 develop a better grasp of pronunciation, sentence structure, and grammar.
